The Velvet Underground Collected

Collected traces The Velvet Undergrounds evolution from their formation in New Yorks underground art scene to some of the most influential recordings in rock history. Lou Reeds literary rhythm-and-blues-rooted songwriting met Welsh multi-instrumentalist John Cales appetite for minimalism and distortion joined by guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker whose unconventional standing drum style became one of the bands defining sonic traits. Andy Warhols involvement as manager and his introduction of Nico into the group led directly to their landmark debut The Velvet Underground & Nico represented here by Im Waiting For The Man Venus In Furs Heroin and All Tomorrows Parties. The follow-up White Light/White Heat pushed further into raw chaotic territory a record Cale himself described as consciously anti-beauty before Cales departure prompted a shift toward the more melodic introspective songwriting that would go on to define much of Reeds career. Despite limited commercial success during their active years the bands influence has grown steadily since and they are now inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
